U17 match report

Devon v Wiltshire    U17 Match
14/01/2007

Devon 26 - Somerset 10

Team:
  • Jamie Roberton
  • Dominic Trewin
  • Joe Hollis
  • Tom Shapland
  • Will Hawkes
  • Lewis Hammett
  • Leanne Debenham
  • Charlotte Hawkins
  • Katrina Taylor
  • Tanya Broom
  • Chloe Gaskin
  • Sophie Down

A very early start for the team didn’t manage to dampen the spirits and with the ever industrious Clive Gaskin driving the minibus (and me catching a crafty 40 winks) the bus trundled its way to remote Wiltshire.

A freezing cold hall encouraged good warm ups and the games were quickly under way.  Charlotte did her usual job of demolishing her opponent and Leanne again did things the hard way and won in an epic three games.  Joe, Tom and Will all won their Mens Singles in three games, Tom’s ending 25-23 in the final game.  Will’s success, his first singles win in a county match, was put down to the inspiration provided by the threat of no McDonalds on the way home if he lost again!  Lewis Hammett, playing his first county match for Devon, played a very attacking game against a difficult opponent and won in two straight games.

In the Doubles some new pairings were tested to spread the strength.  Jamie and Dominic played well together, Jamie’s winning shot of their hardest game a true wonder ‘round the back’ shot!  Charlotte and Kat won their three rubbers too.

The team almost took a clean sweep in the mixed, with Kat and Dominic unlucky to lose their second game 20-22.  Sophie and Tom battled hard against stubborn opponents to win their rubber in three games, whilst Tanya and Will won their first mixed rubber together in two games.

The result, the best of the season so far, will only serve to fuel confidence and some new pairings seemed to work well.  All the players played well and kept pushing and concentrating.  A total of 12 rubbers went to 3 games, and we only lost 1 of those…this is testament to the determination and grit that Devon showed.
